How does YOY's ownership model work?

YOY means You Own Your AI. The app is free. Your memory, knowledge base and API keys live on your machine — you pick the AI provider, you hold the key, you pay only for what you use at wholesale API rates. No subscription, no lock-in.

Do I need an API key?

Yes — one key from any provider you like (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Z.AI, DeepSeek, OpenRouter… 35 providers supported). Paste it into Settings → API Keys and you're running in under a minute. Save as many keys as you like — YOY cascades to your next key automatically if one fails. Keys stay encrypted on your machine.

What does it cost to run?

The app is free. You pay your AI provider directly at wholesale API rates — typically a few dollars a month for everyday use, far less than a $20/mo subscription. Heavy users pay more, light users pay pennies. You set the pace, and YOY never adds markup.

Where is my data stored?

Locally, on your machine. Conversations, memory, knowledge base, and API keys (encrypted via macOS Keychain / Windows DPAPI) never leave your computer unless you explicitly connect a channel like Telegram. That's the local-first design.

Can it really control my computer? Is that safe?

Yes — with you in charge the whole time. Desktop control is off until you enable it. Safe Mode asks before anything sensitive runs. You can grant or revoke computer access at any time in one click. Every action is written to a local audit log you can inspect. Nothing happens without your permission.

Does it open any ports on my computer?

No. YOY runs locally and never opens inbound ports to the internet — no doors for attackers. (Cloud-tethered agents like OpenClaw require exposed external endpoints; YOY does not.) Messaging channels such as Telegram connect via outbound polling only, so your machine stays unreachable from outside.
